Jim Hoeft of Bearing Drift has had an article up for a few days now, asking that those who agree with ending Lee Jackson Day to sign a petition to create a new holiday, Virginia Heritage Day.
The hateful responses at his blog are instructive of how much work needs to be done to educate those who revere Lee and Jackson beyond all sensible arguments. The comments run the gamut from not being worthy enough to shine either of these men’s boots, to some agreement.
The blind allegiance to a certain part of history will not advance this country or society. All the stereotypes of what others think of when they think of southern culture that buys into ‘Heritage, not Hate’ are present in that article’s comments.
It’s sad really, to see this country as a whole (and it is whole) moving forward while other elements of society, mostly driven by miseducation and being uneducated about what all this really means, standing in the way of reform. In terms of how we all get along, this could be a wonderful step in the process.
But, alas, it was ever thus.
Shit stinks. It’s not the word “shit” that stinks, it’s the substance.
“Lee Jackson” is only two words. Call the day something else, if you like, but it’s still nothing but Virginia stubbornly clinging to past shames. And that also stinks.
What did you expect from a hate-mongering website like Boring Daft? Nothing but hateful people, spewing their hateful messages. Between Hoeft and Kirwin, they could start their own little “Hitler Youth” squad and exterminate all they dislike. I think just pointing people in the direction of this ignorant web site is a dis-service to the intelligent people who blog. Nothing but hate on Bearing Drift! NOTHING!
